Ramadan Resources

Thank you Central Office for the following resources!

This month Muslims from around the world are celebrating Ramadan.  Ramadan is the month that marks when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad. During this month, Muslims take part in many activities such as nightly prayer, charity, community and fasting.  Observance of Ramadan is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam.  We wish all of our students, staff and community a Ramadan Mubarak.

On April 21, Muslims will celebrate Eid al Fitr.  Eid al Fitr translates into “the festival of the breaking of the fast” (when the new moon is sighted) where families and friends celebrate the end of Ramadan.

During the time of Ramadan Muslim students and staff may be fasting.  Younger students may be fasting for part or all of the day due to their age.   The fasting time begins at dawn and ends at sunset.  Please be sure to offer accommodations for students during this time.  Some may be as follows:

  • An alternative location for lunch

  • Exemption from physically strenuous activities during the day(Alternative assignments will be provided))

  • Teachers will be mindful of due dates and assignments to best accommodate the fasting students’ schedules.

Here at South Orange-Maplewood, our diversity is our strongest asset.  In that spirit, please make time in your classroom schedule to provide learning opportunities for your students about Ramadan as a way to build community and share the lives of our students and staff with all of our students. Please note that there are resources for a variety of subjects including music, art, ELA, STEAM, and social studies.   Students may even want to share about their celebrations.  Below we have included resources to use in the classroom.   In addition to the resources, several organizations have put together lesson plans.  They are also included below.  Please be sure to preview each article or video you will use to examine the appropriateness of the material for your students' developmental age and grade appropriateness.

We want to thank you for your continued work in creating an inclusive learning environment for all students and your continued work in building learning experiences where all children are seen and heard.
